CSR rating in Europe
August 22, 2013

Novethic, the French reference for research on Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), published in July 2013 a list of CSR rating agencies operating in France (and by extension, in Europe). The overview provides per rating agency a description of the history, the organisational structure, the geographical spread, the product range and the methodology of the organisation, thus allowing comparisons between different agencies.

The most important trend identified by the study is the growing number of partnerships between CSR rating agencies and the growing number of close alliances with local partners in specific geographic regions. Collaborations with research centers specialized in, for example, CO2 impact measurements, engagement or controversy screening processes, make it possible to expand and to differentiate the product ranges. In turn, collaborations with local, often small-scale, research groups in less accessible markets  pave the way to a larger geographical scope. Engagement (influencing company policy through active shareholding) and controversy screening (in the form of alert messages) are pinpointed by Novethic as the main innovations in the product ranges of the rating agencies.

Finally, the report mentions ARISTA® 3.0 as the (only) European quality and transparency standard for research on CSR. Most of the major groups in Europe as Vigeo, EIRIS, EthiFinance, ECODES, GES, imug and Oekom research are already ARISTA®- certified. ARISTA® thus answers the growing demand for more quality, transparency, integrity and accountability in CSR research. The quality standard is managed by the Association for Responsible Investment Services (ARISE) of which Forum ETHIBEL is member.
