The ethical investment code of Ethias
August 09, 2013

Ethias SA has pushed its beacons forward with regards to its corporate responsibility. Since 2007, the insurer has already been submitting its investment fund ' Global Ethical 21' to Forum ETHIBEL for verifying its compliance with the Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Register. Ethias now goes a step further and turns to Forum ETHIBEL for the external supervision of the compliance with its ethical investment code.

The ethical investment code fits in the care of Ethias to the long-term interests of its insured, more specifically in the areas of legal and supplementary pensions. The ethical dimension is based on a set of ethical and humanistic guidelines, such as those of the International Labour Organisation around union rights and the prohibition of child labor and the prohibition to invest in companies involved in the production or sale of controversial weapons. The code is imposed on all portfolio managers and is also communicated to the counterparties and financial intermediaries.

Compliance with the ethical principles is based on a list of investments that are prohibited. This 'blacklist' is managed and compiled through a collaboration between Réseau Financement Alternatif and the Ethical Investment Committee of Ethias. Forum ETHIBEL, as an independent third party, is responsible for the audit and certification of the stocks and bonds in the portfolio RSZPPO (National Social Security Office of the Provincial and Local Governments). This means that Forum ETHIBEL investigates whether the investments of the funds that are entrusted to Ethias are entirely in accordance with the Ethical Investment Code, i.e. whether the investments conform to the blacklist.

The financial years 2011 and 2012 already resulted in positive reviews. The results of this audit round can be consulted in the certification declaration (in Dutch or in French).
